Pupils get into the spirit of the Olympics

Falkirk school pupils blew the starting whistle on a project to help young people get fitter and healthier in the run-up to this summer’s Rio Olympics.

Students at Falkirk High School helped young people from Loretto Care’s Garry Place Housing Support Service take part in fitness sessions and healthy cooking workshops.

Loretto Care, which is a member of Wheatley Group, organised the sessions as part of Get Set for Community Action, a Wheatley project aiming to generate a buzz around the Olympics.

The project also aims to strengthen relationships between young people and their communities.

Fifth and sixth year pupils at Falkirk High took the people Loretto Care works for through various gym exercises, including boxing and weights, as well as cookery classes.

Falkirk High Head Teacher Keith Webster said: “The pupils really enjoyed the day and it was good to see strong relationships being built between pupils and the community.

“The project gave the pupils a different way to use their leadership skills and learn more about the wider community.

“It was really successful and the young people are really looking forward to the next sessions.”

Loretto Care’s Garry Place service supports up to 15 young people aged 16-25 to move into permanent tenancies and access jobs, training and educational opportunities.

Loretto Director Cathy Fallon said: “We always want to help the people we work for learn new skills, grow in confidence and develop strong links with their community.

“I was really impressed by the enthusiasm of the Falkirk High pupils and it was great to see the interaction.

“This project will help the people we work for develop their independence, lead healthier lifestyles and make new friends.”

The pupils at Falkirk High will be running another two sessions with Loretto Care later this month.
